Among many skin beauty technologies, long pulse width 1064nm laser and photon redness removal are two common choices. But many people are confused about the difference between them and how to choose. There are essential differences between long pulse width 1064nm laser and picosecond 1064nm laser and nanosecond 1064nm laser. Picosecond 1064nm laser, as the name implies, is a 1064nm laser with an emission time/action time of picoseconds (10⁻¹² seconds), which is mainly used to deal with pigmentary problems, such as freckles, sun spots, brown-blue moles, etc. The action time of long pulse width 1064nm laser is between microseconds and milliseconds, such as a laser with a pulse width of 0.3 - 30ms.


When the pulse width is 0.3-1ms, the long pulse width 1064nm laser can play a significant role in microvascular lesions that are difficult to detect with the naked eye, such as diffuse flushing; when the pulse width is 5-30ms, it has a stronger targeting effect on red blood vessels and varicose veins that are visible to the naked eye and have a diameter of more than 1mm. In addition, the optical penetration depth of the 1064nm laser wavelength can reach 1.7mm, which has a good ability to clear deep vascular lesions. In contrast, the penetration depth of photons 560nm or 590nm is relatively shallow, which is the first major difference between the two.


When dealing with unstable skin problems such as rosacea, sensitive skin, and dermatitis, the safety advantage of the long pulse width 1064nm laser is more prominent. Because the 1064nm laser wavelength absorbs less melanin, hemoglobin, and water, it will not cause strong tissue heating when the energy is not high. Especially the millisecond-level 1064nm laser, which has low power (power = energy / pulse width, the longer the pulse width, the lower the power), can flexibly adjust the intensity.



However, the 560/590nm wavelength of photons is more absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin, and the pulse width is usually 3-6ms, which is relatively short. Even with low energy, it may cause certain temperature changes. For this type of unstable skin problem, the light modulation idea mentioned above requires avoiding strong tissue heating. The temperature rise is best controlled within 4°C. The skin surface temperature is generally around 34-35°C. It is advisable to control the temperature within 39°C during light modulation. The long pulse width 1064nm laser has a wide safety window and is not easy to irritate unstable skin conditions due to excessive heating.
